Stop loss is a certain condition where you are allowing your balance to lose. We know we don't like it if our position hits the SL, of course we prefer it hits the TP. Stop loss is to save our balance from being more lose. For new trader stop loss is always in negativeor in loss condition. Stop loss can be in positive too, if we have some profit in our open position then set the SL into +pips. So stop loss is not always in negative, it can be in positive too.
