can we keep a position open for an indefinite period?

Obviously we can take decision in the market for indefinite period and open sell order at very high rate in the market and open buy order at stream bottom levels in the market so that collect maximum pips from the market easily.

i mean if i bought a position without using leverage,can i open my position for longtime and can i sell when the rate increased only or we get losses when the price of position falls in between before increasing more than the price at i bought.
ex:suppose i buy gold at 1650 on october 2011,i keep my position live for october 2012 as that time only it increased to 1670.so can i sell at that time? or will i get any losses or my entire position get closed if in between october 2011 to september2012,the price range is 1020 to 1540.
