when I used to trade everything under the sun, I would let a few things
totally get away from me at times because they weren’t as important as
others. For example, say I was long cotton and crude and they were slightly
against me. And say I was making a little bit in hogs and corn. And say I
was short coffee and it was really killing me. I probably had another eight
positions on, but I’ll just focus on these for the example. All my attention
now is on that freaking coffee trade, which is just getting worse and worse.
It went through my mental stop and now I was panicking trying to figure out
what to do. And while it kept me distracted, all my other small losers and
winners started to get a little worse as well. Individually these trades didn’t
amount to much, so I didn’t pay much attention to them. However, all my
focus was on the coffee debacle because I was down $2,000 in it. Little did
I realize I’m down about the same cumulatively in my other positions and
before long panic mode hits. I then start exiting the best positions because
I want to lock in a little profit and hold the losers hoping they turn around.
Hopefully you know by now that this is one of the worst trading strategies
you can adopt. Anyway, you get the point.
However, if I had traded a bit differently and still made all of those
trades, I could have fared much better. Assume I still had the same trades
on but this time I had plans for all of them. I took the time to study them,
and to make proper what-if assumptions for all of them. I had set my targets
and exits and I knew what I wanted out of them. Then I actually put real
stops into the market. That last sentence is oh so important as mental stops
are easily forgotten or missed. If you place a real stop in you can focus so
much better and be so much more successful and efficient
