how you trailing stop is applied on trade?

I am also eager to know about trailing stop. But as far as I know with my little experience trailing stop is the process to lock the present profit. If you set trailing stop into a trade then the specific pips will lock if the price come back the point then your trade will close automatically. As a result you will get the profit.
