Tesco plc, headquartered in Welwyn Garden City, England, is a British multinational grocery and general products store. It is the worlds third-largest retailer in terms of gross revenue and the ninth-largest in terms of revenues. It operates stores in five European nations and is the UKs grocery market leader (where it has a market share of around 28.4 percent ).

Jack Cohen started Tesco as a series of market stalls in Hackney, London, in 1919.

After purchasing a shipment of tea from T. E. Stockwell in 1924, Cohen combined those three initials with the first two letters of his surname, and the first Tesco store opened in Burnt Oak, Barnet, in 1931. His company grew quickly, and by 1939, he had over 100 Tesco stores all across the country.

Tesco has been expanding internationally since the early 1990s, having operations in 11 different nations. The company left the United States in 2013, although it is still growing in other countries as of 2018. Tesco has expanded into industries such as book, clothing, electronics, furniture, toys, petrol, software, financial services, telecoms, and internet services since the 1960s. Tesco rebranded itself as a down-market high-volume low-cost retailer in the 1990s, seeking to appeal to a wide range of social groups with its low-cost Tesco Value and premium Tesco Finest ranges.

Tesco is a constituent of the FTSE 100 Index and is listed on the London Stock Exchange.

Tesco expanded organically and through acquisitions during the 1950s and 1960s, eventually owning over 800 stores. 70 of Williamsons stores were purchased in year 1957, 200 Harrow Stores outlets in year 1959, 212 Irwins stores in the year 1960, and 97 Charles Phillips stores in 1964, and also the Victor Value network in 1968. (sold to Bejam in 1986).

Pile it high and sell it cheap, was Jack Cohens business motto, which he supplemented with an internal motto of YCDBSOYA (You Cant Do Business Sitting On Your Arse), which he used to inspire his sales crew.

Tesco launched a loyalty card, dubbed Clubcard, in 1995, as well as an Internet shopping facility later that year. The logos type was updated to the current version that has stripe reflections underneath in 1996, and the corporate font was used for store signs was altered from the familiar typewriter font that had been used since the 1970s to the current version with stripe reflections underneath. In the same year, overseas operations were launched. Terry Leahy became the Chief Executive on February 21, 1997, after his appointment was announced on 21st of November, 1995.

From August 2000 to February 2001, the corporation was the target of a five-month letter bomb campaign in which a bomber posing as Sally mailed letter bombs to Tesco customers demanding that Clubcards be updated to allow cash machine withdrawals.

Tesco entered the internet grocery selling business in the United States in July 2001, when it purchased a 35 percent investment in GroceryWorks. Tesco bought 13 HIT hypermarkets in Poland in 2002. The purchase of T & S Stores, owner of 870 convenience stores in the One Stop, Dillons, and Day & Nite chains in the UK, has made a substantial foray into the convenience store sector.

Tesco bought the C Two-Network in Japan in June 2003. It also bought a controlling share in Kipa, a Turkish retail company. Tesco bought Adminstore, the owner of 45 Cullens, Europa, and Harts convenience stores in and around London, in January 2004.

Tesco began supporting a tiny film studio in 2010 with the goal of producing Tesco-exclusive direct-to-DVD films. The first film, Paris Connections, was released on September 6th and is based on a popular novel by Jackie Collins.

Tesco confirmed the sale of 8.6 percent of its Lazada Group investment in April 2016, leaving it with an 8.3 percent ownership. It was also rumored that the company was looking to sell Dobbies Garden Centres, Giraffe Restaurants, and Harris + Hoole in order to focus on its core grocery business. [

Tesco announced on January 27, 2017, that it had reached an agreement to merge with Britains largest wholesaler, Booker Group, to form the UKs largest food group. However, with Tesco as the UKs largest food retailer and Booker as the UKs largest wholesaler, there are concerns about market dominance. Trevor Masters, the businesss International Chief Executive, stated in March 2017 that he would be leaving in May after 38 years with the company. The company aimed to save £1.5 billion in costs.

Tesco announced another cost-cutting measure in January 2019, announcing the closure of food counters in 90 locations, affecting 9,000 employees. Tesco stated in October 2019 that CEO Dave Lewis would leave down in 2020 and be followed by Ken Murphy.

Tesco set purchasing limitations on specific products (up to three items) in December 2020 in order to provide everyone access to the products, such as eggs, rice, soap, and toilet paper.

In the early 1990s, advertisements featured a man named David, played by Dudley Moore, on the lookout for free-range chickens from France and discovering a plethora of other things from around the world to buy for Tesco. Many celebrities and celebrity voice-overs appeared in late-2000s advertisements, including The Spice Girls and actors James Nesbitt and Jane Horrocks.

"Every bit helps," Tesco's key advertising slogan says. Product images (or a relevant image, such as a car when promoting gasoline) against a white background, with a price or appropriate text (e.g., "Tesco Value") superimposed on a red circle, are the mainstay of its print and television advertisements.

Tesco's in-store magazine is one of the most widely circulated in the UK, with 1.9 million copies in circulation as of 2013.

Tesco stated in November 2013 that it would use Amscreen's face-scanning technology to target adverts to specific customers at all of its 450 UK gas stations.
